Skye Battles is a creative director, photographer, and writer based in San Francisco. At WIRED, she art directs features spanning science, culture, technology, and politics. She commissions and directs photographers, illustrators, and collage artists for the magazine’s long-form stories. For the politics and security desks, she curates daily news visuals and produces original illustrations. She pioneered a broader approach to the photo essay at WIRED, becoming the first in the art department to independently pitch, report, interview subjects, and photograph a feature-length photo essay.
With twenty years of photography experience and fifteen years creative directing shoots, Skye has worked across editorial, cultural institutions, and spatial design. She has also collaborated with select brand clients to develop visual identities for emerging companies. Her long-term, self-directed documentary projects explore women, subcultures, and American identity. Her work has been exhibited in galleries throughout California, New York, and Massachusetts.
She is available for creative, art, and editorial direction.
